Step by Step
Make a cardboard template(9 and 3/8 inches by 10 and 1/2 inches interior). Set on wallpaper. Position the 10.5 inch sides to find where the pattern repeats. the 10.5 inch sides must match up for your rolling pin seam to repeat invisibly.
Make a cardboard template(9 and 3/8 inches by 10 and 1/2 inches interior). Set on wallpaper. Position the 10.5 inch sides to find where the pattern repeats. the 10.5 inch sides must match up for your rolling pin seam to repeat invisibly.
Preciesly cut the sheet. A rolliong craft knife is the best way to cut textured wall paper. Use a metal ruler to make sure the cut is straight. If your cuts are sloppy, they will show up as flaws oin your rolling pin surface.
With the low setting, use aheat gun to liquefy the vaseling in the jar. Be careful not to melt the container.
With the textured side of the wallpaper facing down on tht 2" diameter pipe, tape the edges(10½" length) of wallpaper together. The Entire length of paper must be tighly taped together (no gaps). Clear packing tape works well.
Remove excess vaseline. Use a paper towel to mop up the excess. The surface should look saturated(darker) but not greasy. Note: Vinyl backed papers from anaglypta® and Lincrusta® work the best.
With the heat gun on low, melt the vaseline into the wallpaper. when the wall paper darkens(see left side of paper), you have properly saturated the paper.
Bush the liquid Vaseline onto the entire surface of the wallpaper. (Textured side only.)
Cneter and secure the 2" PVC pipe inside the center of the closet flange. Stack two popsicle sticks on each side of the 2" pipe to help center it within the flange.
Next tightly sealthe gap between pipe and flange with non sulfere oil clay(no odor).
Remove the sticks and fill in the gaps with more clay.
Clean up the clay seal, making it smooth and flat. A smooth clay surface will create a cleaner edge on the finished rolling pin.
Pull the acetate up so a ½" tall lip extends above the 3" pipe. Next slide the wallpaper upqards so it is flush with the top of the 3".
Flatten the wallpaper seam inside. Place another ½$quot; pipe inside the 3" pipe. Use a gentle rolling motion to press the wall paper cylinder flat aainst the inside surface of the 3" pipe. If the Wallpaper was not cut accurately it will not lay flat. Fix it by recutting your paper.
Gently compress the wallpaper cylinder so that it will slide inside the 3" pipe. Make sure the wall paper is touching the acetate sheets in side the pipe. If the paper does not fit snugly against teh acetate, silicone will leak in between. If your paper doe snot lay flat against the inside of the pipe, remove it, trim it down, re-tape and re-insert it.
Next line the 3" pipe with acetate (or note book paper). Place three sheeats of 8½" x 11" acetate (long side down) intot the 3" pipe. Each shopuld overlap by about 50%. If you don't do this, the silicone will stick to the pipe. Disaster.
Put the 3" pipe over the 2" pipe. Vaseline the flange (short post at the bottom) and place a popsicle spacer on the bottom before using clay to seal the 3" pipe on the flange.
Check your center. There should be a consistent %frac12;" gap between the 2" pipe and the inside of the 3" pipe. This is the gap where the silicone will flow into.
If the gap is not uniform , carefully tilt the inside pipe until it is perfectly centered
Seal the bottom joitn of the 3" pipe and flange with oil clay. if you do not do this, silicone will leak out the bottom of the pipe.
Mix the catalyst and the base until the color is uniform sure to mix all of the material that is along the container wall and bottom.
Add 45 grams of catalyst(that's 10% of the base).
Break out your Flex & Bake™ silicone starter kit. In the container provided with your Flex & Bake™ Silicone Starter kit, measure 450 grams of base. Note that the scale is sealed inside a ziplock bag to keep it clean.
Carefully set the 2" end cap onto the pipe. Do not push it down mare than ¼&quot ontothe 2" pipe. Check to make sure the clay seal is still tight.
Pour the silicone in a slow, thin stream over the end cap. You might choose to sit down whiel pouring, as it will take about 6 minutes to slowly fill the pipe. (when you get close to the end, remix the silicone left in the bucket, before finishing the pour). then place out of the way ona level surface and let it cure for 24 hours.
After 24-36 hours, the silicone will be ready to remove. Use a razor knife to trim off the ½" tall acetate lip and the excess silicone it contains.
Remove clay seal from flange base
Use a screw driver to pry the pipe off the flange. If you didn't use enough vaseline on the flange, you will have to stand on the flange and pull the pipe upwards with force. Fun to watch, not fun to do.
Carefully peel away the textured paper. if you applied enough vaseline, it should come off easily. After removing the the paper, the silicone will feel greasy. Wash off the Vaseline residue with soap and water.
Remove the acetate liner. Peel off the acetate sheets and trim away the silicone 'flash' (excess material that leaked around the edges).
This is the moment of truth. The only reason why the cylinder slides out is beacause of the acetate liner. If you forgoot the acetate, no amount of force will help you free the cylinder.
Push the silicone out of the pipe. Use the 2" end cap as a pushing block to help force the silicone cylinder out of the 3" pipe.
Insert the roller pipe, by placing the 1½" diameter x 16&quot Long pipe iside of the 2" pipe.
Next push the 1½" PVC copupler onto the end of the 16" long pipe.
Turn the pipe over and put the second coupler onto the 16" long pipe. Push firmly. If you do not permanently glue the 'handles' on, the center roller can be used for another textured rolling pin.
The rolling pin is complete and ready for action. Note: Flex & Bake™ starts out very purple but will turn pale wit htime as it cures.

In this demo you will see how a samll ammount of silicone, a sheet of textured wall paper and a trip to your local hardware store can result in a highly versatile textured rolling pin. Since the rolling pin's surface is silicone, it is ideal for for adding texture to your chocolate fondant, dead dough, pastiallge and even marzipan. Lets get started.
